The Honest Truth -Dan Gemeinhart NCEA 1, question number 5: Describe at least one challenge faced by a character or individual in the written text. Explain how this challenge helped you to understand the character or individual. In this essay, I will describe some challenges faced by Mark from the written text. I will also explain why it was an important moment to the text as a whole. The Honest Truth describes Mark, who is the main character in this novel, as a twelve-year-old boy with cancer. He was diagnosed with cancer at the young age of 7. After hearing about his disastrous news, he began treatment immediately, which had a positive impact on his body and for a couple of years, he had been cured of cancer-free by his doctor. Sadly though, his cancer returned with striking back harder, putting Mark into an even worse state than he was in before. Mark eventually had enough of all his hospital treatments, so he decides to run away and spend the rest of his short life pursuing his goals and ambitions, and to keep his grandfather’s promise. Which was to conquer Mt Rainier alone, with only his trusty sidekick, his dog Beau, to keep him company. On this mountainous adventure of his, Mark faces many obstacles and challenges along the way. He gets beaten up by a gang of young teenagers who not only beat him up, but they also stole his money and left him to die on the street. Later on, Mark nearly faces death again from hunger and hypothermia as he pushes on his journey up Mount Rainier. Having cancer was a huge disadvantage for Mark, but his determination was stronger than his sickness, and he managed to live up to his grandfather’s promise and achieved his goal. Mark has a major problem with accepting that he has cancer along the way throughout the book, he keeps going on about ‘what he doesn’t get about the world’. Throughout his journey, he starts to accept that he is not the only one with problems in the world. He started to realize when Shelby and her parents had recently just split up and she's mad at her dad see for example On the bus to Paradise, Mark meets six-year-old Shelby who is traveling with her older brother to visit their dad. Shelby's parents are divorced and she is understandably angry at her father. Mark encourages her to forgive her father. Another example is when Wesley, that Mark hitches a ride with, tells Mark that he can relate to the worry and fear that mark is dealing with. He has stage 4 cancer and Wesley on the other hand who is still coping with the death of his son in Iraq. these are the two main reasons which helped mark to persuade himself to not hate the way he looked and who he was, and from these very reasons it was so convincing that mark didn't decide to die on the mountain he decided to live and if this act wasn’t to occur than mark would've surely died on that mountain along with Beau. As I started reading more and more of the book I started to realize and started to understand why he was doing what he was doing at that time. He wanted to live up to his grandfather's promise. And he had reason to believe that he had very limited time due to his cancer which caused him to go as soon as he could even as if it was the last thing he did. But as the story unfolds that the people that he met on his ways such as Wesley, Shelby and the angels had convinced him well enough that at the moment when he decides on that he will not die on that mountain that he will not die there not that day.
